My name is Barry and I am looking for the family of my grandmother, Amelia Powell. She gave birth to my mother at 33 Baden Terrace, Penyard, in 1911. No fathers name appears on the birth certificate. I have been trying to locate Baden Terrace on the 1901 census but without accurate information the census search engine wont give up the details. Was Baden Terrace even there in 1901? I have visited the location and it is still there now.

We have just posted the Penyard section of the 1901 O.S Map on the Penyard Page.
http:www//alangeorge.co.uk/penyard.htm
This should answer Barry's Question.

Re: Penyard
Many thanks Allan for the map, Baden Terrace is certainly there as you no doubt know. I shall now try again to call up no33 on the census address search. Your website is one of the best I have seen on a single town, good luck for the future with it. I have ordered the map cd by the way.

I am researching my wife's families from Merthyr Tydfil (LOCKYER/WILLIAMS & REES/EVANS ) and many of the men were miners or worked in the iron works. Is there a list of the trades somewhere as I would like to know more about what the jobs entailed (other than hard work) for example baller, straightener, lander on top of coal mine pit. Also on one birth certificate dated 1883 the address is given as "Back of D? ?? Arms Inn, Penydarran Road" - any ideas ? Matthew

Does anyone know of the location of Pedwranfach in Merthyr. My cousin in Seven Sisters said it was in the location of the old Renault Garage off the High Street but I have yet been unable to locate old maps of the area to prove this one way or another. My Woozley ancestors lived there from pre-1841 to their deaths in the 1850s. I also wonder what iron works were in that area, which would help me narrow down their place of employment.

8-)My Grandfather, Robert H. Weale led many bands from about 1915 to 1927 in Troedyrhiw before emigrating to Canada. Two names that come to mind are the Troedyrhiw Mission Band and the Apollo Concert Band associated with Castle Pit. Robert Weale's residence prior to leaving for Canada was Wyndham House which is 35 Wyndham Street. There was a picture of the bands in the Merthyr Express in about July- August of 1973, Titled The Music Men of Troedyrhiw. I would greatly appreciate any information or pictues relating to him. Thank you Robert from Canada.. ;D

Hello All,
I just joined this forum. I am hoping it will bring light to a ark corner in my ancestry that remains elusive to me.
My G.G.Grandfather was Daniel Jenkins (according to various censuses) born in Merthyr about 1814. He left there at some point before 1841 to live and work in Ystradgynlais whee he met and married Lyzzod Watkins.
Merthyr today is a big area, but what was there of Merthyr in 1814? As he went to work in the Ynyscedwen Iron works in Ystalyfera by Ystradgynlais I must presume he did this work inMerthyr or came from a family that did, or maybe they were miners. In any event, could someone perhaps tell me possibly "Where" he would have worked in Merthyr around 1825 to 1835, where was there employment in Merrthyr in the period 1810 to 1825? In which Church could he have been Christened or Baptised?
All and any information greatly appreciated.
John Jones

Hello John, Thanks for joining our Forum, I will attempt to answer your questions.
Merthyr Tydfil was a large rural parish and a small village until industry started here in the 1750s. By the time Daniel Jenkins was born in 1814 Merthyr Tydfil had already grown to be the largest town in wales and thousands of workers, mainly from Wales (West Wales mostly), but some from England and Scotland, came here to work (the Irish came from 1815) In 1814 there were four large ironworks here, the biggest in the world then and the Napoleonic wars meant that iron was in great demand for cannon etc. The 1820s were an exceptionally profititable time here and a lot of money was made, Coal and ironstone was mined for the ironworks, this was the main employment. Skilled Ironworkers from Merthyr Tydfil went all over Wales, England and even France to set up their Ironworks. Cholera came into Merthyr in the 1830s and there were periods of hardship here in the 1840s causing some people to move away. In the period 1810 to 1825 all marrages had to be in the # Parish Church of Saint Tydfil's, but less than 10% belonged to this Church and there are 10 or so Chapels and Churches where children could have been christened, but 30% of the population were Welsh Baptists and they did not christen or baptise infants. Merthyr Tydfil Library has records of baptisms before 1837.

My g-grandfather, William Evans, was born Merthyr 1835. His parents were William Evans and Catherine Griffith. They were miners. He came to New Zealand via the Australian goldfields 1860s and married Jessie Reid whose parents were miners at Millerhill, MLN,Scotland.
