I was in Bishop Hedley in the L1, L2 etc year. I think Mr Foley has retired now, so has Miss Fuller and Mrs Price. Mr BP Evans was my first year form tutor, he is still there (we started at the school the same day!!). Mr Lane was the headmaster, we hardly ever saw him, different to today where all of the teachers are much more laid back and involved, compared to then.

I've just had some friends from Wales over here to Brittany and one of them was an Arts Master in Bishop Hedley before he transferred to a school in Llandovery: his name was Mr ap Steffan, he was there for a few years and was friendy with Mr (Welsh/Italian from the Station Café in town) was it Fulgoni?.

I remember Mr Fulgoni, but my art master was Mr Conti a fearful man but I thought he was great. Also Mr Williams (art). The boys also had a p.e. teacher but I can't remember his name he was built like a swimmer, huge shoulders, wasn't there for long. At the time I was there (during my first year) Mr Hamen was my french teacher, Mrs Price music, Miss Evans maths, Miss Davies welsh, Miss Bridges english, Mr Mahoney R.E. Mr BP Evans General Science, Mr Matthews geography, Miss Evans ( i think) history) .There was a teacher called Mr Peter Williams who is no longer with us, he taught history and I was so jealous of my friends who were in his class because they all said how great he was, strict but very fair, absolutely brilliant teacher, he brought everything alive, he taught my daughter 15 years later and he was still brilliant. I hated school but if every teacher was like him I think things would have been so different

I remember when I started in Bishop Hedley the year name was Reginald and I was in class R. Mrs Lloyd was head of year. Mrs Hughes taught French. I did French A Level with Mrs Townsend later. I am interested to hear from anybody in the same year as me. (I remember Miss Fuller who taught Sports - she was friendly with my sister, Mary.)

Is there anybody out there who was at Bishop Hedley between 1972 and 1978? I would be interested in exchanging views. I am in London and am just wondering what has happened to my peers (teachers). I was back home in 2000 and saw some of the changes to Merthyr. I think it looks better than Newport.

Alas, left BH in 1972 leaving nary a trace. Things I remember... FM eating sheep sh*t to win a playground bet. JP, who tried to set fire to the school and probably ended up in Bridgend, Miss B hem line getting shorter and shorter C (Art teacher) - who once called me a nut - running around from floor to floor answering the same phone call Incessantly dropping my pencil to get a butchers up the divine Miss D's (Welsh teacher) bum The late, but great, PW giving instructions on how to install your own distillery in house Being sent to the corner of the room - for playing with acid - by the insufferable W KB talking about the energy crisis in 1969. Mr H (French poser) , who was always top of my sh*t list -winking at the girls in lang lab Mr M's (geography - who the hell cares where Jutland is anyway) annual April fool joke...the Loof Lirpa Can't remember her name, nice old biddy who was drunk in class - kept asking to open and then close the windows Miss K..liked her, she gave me a lift once Miss P flirting with everything in sight - deliberately left the test answers in the bin for all to see. Some idiots still managed to fail. Miss O telling us (gasp) that the Church had got it all wrong about abortion Sister B - fierce but fair Mr M - never forgave him for making me write out Glynneath 25 times. He was the one who couldn't spell. Bald eagle M (careers advisor) who totally crushed all my hopes of becoming an artist Someone muttering f*ck, f*ck, c*nt, c*nt at the back of the class during Religious Education Being infatuated with Mr C's wife.. God she looked just like a China Doll.. Mr L's purple shirt Mr W the deputy head suggestively saying oui oui in French class Mr G sitting on two legs of his chair Miss E, the spinster head mistress giving us lessons in sex education Oh and SA cracking a baseball bat across the backside of every one of the boys who didn't show up with their kit on a snowy day - read, pretty much everyone, including teachers pet and now priest, LH My brother - a faithful member of the duffel coat brigade (always fake sniffling to avoid any form of exertion) laughing all night at his PE report.."Who is this boy"? Oh happy days...um err

I removed the names from my previous post as I just noticed how some juicy tales were being linked by the search engines with the school. I felt it unfair to put these things out there 40 years after the fact and certainly didn't want to offend anyone, nor the reputation of Bishop Hedley. No malice intended and anyone (teacher or pupil) who recognizes themselves in the text then contact me and we'll share a laugh and a beer.
