Hi. i’ve finally decided to try my hand at tracing my ancestors, now I have a bit more time from work commitments. But I really have little idea where to start and my knowledge of family past is patchy. I was born in Gwaunfaran maternity home in 1951 and lived in Gellifaelog Road, going to Gellifaelog Primary School and then County Grammar. My father, Trevor Williams, was a bus driver, my Mam, Rachel, (nee Rees), a housewife. I only remember my PGM who died when I was about 10/ 11. I think my father’s family were Merthyr born. I know little about my mother’s side of the family; I think her parents both died when she was a teenager and she went to live with an aunt in Broad Street, Dowlais but I can’t ever remember meeting them. Mam had one brother, Emrys who was killed in the east during WW2. Dad died in 1963. i had two sisters, both a little older than me, one of whom is now deceased. I have found one photograph of each of them on school photos on this site. We attended Gwernllwyn Chapel, (sometimes three times every Sunday) and I remember my sisters friends, Marilyn Pratt and Cheryl Farrow. Where is the best place to find old Merthyr records and photographs. I went to Merthyr library a few years ago but I got the feeling there are no records held there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Mai It can depend on where you are living and if you can use a computer or not you can go on Ancestry.com and Find my past in the libraries in Wales for free not sure about libraries outside of Wales. Merthyr Library do have a number of records for baptism / marriage for churches and some chapel records, they have electoral records, old photos, old newspapers you could look at old newspapers to see if there are any death/funeral reports in them they could give family members and addresses in the reports. The library has ancestry and find my past for free if you are a member of the library. If you ask for help and it is quiet they will help you. You could join a local family history society and get help from them also.

Hi, Mike, Thanks for a quick response. I have not strayed far from home; I now live in Monmouthshire, so can access Libraries in Wales. I will certainly go up and spend some days in Merthyr library. I spent enough time there as a kid but couldn’t understand why it had shrunk when I went back as an adult !!! I go up to Penydarren, Dowlais and Penywern from time to time just to go around places I remember. So many memories. Does Merthyr have a family history society or is there one which covers Merthyr? I appreciate you taking the time to reply and any further advice you or anyone else could give would be welcome.
Mai

Hi Mai Merthyr does have a family history society it is a branch of the Glamorganshire Family History Society, they meet at old Zoar Chapel in Merthyr High street it is now a Welsh language/Arts Centre. They have their meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 1.30 pm in one of the rooms. There is a large Family History Day Fair in Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday 12th of October 2019, time 10.00am - 3.30 pm at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre there is free parking and admission to the Fair. There are a large number of branch tables and different Societies going to the fair it might be an idea to go to the fair and see if it helps you. The Gwent Family History Society will be there also. Hope to see you there. Mike

Hi, Mike, Yes, I will certainly go to the Family History Day Fair. I’m sure I’ll find lots that are interesting and helpful. Will you be taking part in it? I’ll also try to get up to the Family History Society next month. Thank you for all your help. Mai
