Hi there I’m new to the forum so please excuse any mistakes . I am trying to find out about my Sullivan family who moved to Merthyr from Ireland in the late 1850s
I believe my great grandad John Sullivan was born in 1840-41 in Co cork Ireland and married Catherine Lyons also from Ireland in 1861 at St Mary’s church in Georgetown merthyr. I can’t find any info on his or her parents And I was wandering if anyone could lend me a helping hand to try and solve this mystery.
Johns father is listed on his marriage certificate as Patrick Sullivan deceased. His fathers occupation was a cordwainer but I can’t find any Patrick Sullivan’s that fit the bill at all? Is there any way we can crack this enigma ?
Also John died after 1901 not to sure when but it was before 1911 as his house goes to his eldest son in the 1911 census so I assume he was dead. John lived at 28 Napier street mountain ash from 1871-1901 and being a catholic I was wandering where he would be buried as I would love to visit the churchyard ?
Also I think the distance from Georgetown to mountain ash is about 20 miles so is this a feasible move and why would they have done it ?
Kindest regards John.

Hello John there is a death report in the MERTHYR EXPRESS newspaper of a JOHN SULLIVAN aged 58 of 28 NAPIER STREET MOUNTAIN ASH who fell down the stairs in his house. This is on page 5 of 26th March 1904 edition of newspaper it may say where he was buried I don't put that down on my lists. If you can't look at newspaper on line get in touch with MERTHYR TYDFIL CENTRAL LIBRARY give them the details they can send you a copy of report. They also would have Church Wedding certificate for the marriage of JOHN and CATHERINE which they could send copy of. DATE 8TH MAY 1860.

There are lots of entries for JOHN SULLIVAN and CATHERINE LYONS on ANCESTRY FAMILY TREES pages they give JOHN'S father as JEREMIAH and mother as CATHERINE MC'CARTHY worth a look!

The Merthyr Exprees newspaper on the National Library of Wales Newspapers on line website should have the 1904 paper on it although some dates are missing. If not available on line you can contact Merthyr Tydfil Central Library give them the date and page number of the obit and they can send you a copy will not cost much as they will be able to straight to it rather than have to search all through the newspaper for it. Hope this helps. Mike

I'm a descendent. My late grandfather's name is Vincent Sullivan. He was born early 1930s. His Grandfather was from Cork. I know the cemetery where they are buried. Also all the other family too. Loads of us still very much alive. Very late post but would be cool to get in touch 👍
