I am planning a visit to the area in April to visit my ancestor's homes, now doing some research to make the most of the trip, since it will likely be my one and only trip from here in Maine, USA. I do not know much about my grandfather's family (Blethen) but do know more about my grandmother's family. I will be visiting sites related to the Powell, Davies, and Evans families in Crai, Trecastle, and Dowlais. In particular, I would like to learn more about the school my great grandfather last attended before he was taken out to emigrate to America. Can anyone tell me more about this school and if the building still stands? I have attached a scan of the last school book record that he brought to America. Any correspondence is appreciated. Hello David The school was knocked down sometime between 1970 and 1980 if I remember correctly. There were some school records held in DOWLAIS or MERTHYR TYDFIL Central Library but these may now have been sent to The Glamorgan Records Office in CARDIFF. The records usually gave pupils date of birth, name of parent or guardian and home address, possible previous school they may have attended. I guess that you have looked at the photos of the school on the OLD MERTHYR TYDFIL website if not have a look at them on the pages under heading SCHOOL'S, then under DOWLAIS CENTRAL SCHOOL. Hope this may give you a bit of help and hope you find a lot of info when you visit the towns in WALES.
Good luck all the Best! Mike
