Hi there...just an initial toe in the ocean....am trying to build up missing family knowledge (as we do in our mid 50's!!) ~ my grandparents (Hill) lived in the old Merthyr area of Penydarren, ?16, Tycloed/Tyclwyd? Street. We used to visit them in the 1970's/80's. They were (I think) Sybil Jemima Hill (nee Thomas) and Patrick (?) Hill and mum had siblings: Tom, Peter, John, Margaret, Theresa, Sybil, Anne... Mum talked of Eddie Thomas (the boxer) being a loyal, kind family friend and Bopa Lew (an elderly lady who had worked in the brickworks as a young girl, with beautiful red hair and who used to sit on her step as an elderly lady dispensing words of wisdom!). Mum and her sisters & brothers went to Cyfartha Grammar school and Mum was in the Hockey team. One of my cousins went to that school too, I believe. My grandfather and some of my relatives, including my mum, worked at Guest Keen (?) and Mum had a friend working in Kayer Bond (? tights & hosiery producer). I am always so proud that I descended from those in Merthyr and this is much admired too, up here in South Yorkshire, where they still show great affection for any links to South Wales, particularly Merthyr, and also show great sympathy (and knowledge) of the Aberfan disaster ~ my father helped to do some of the digging out on that day ~ I have him on a rare BBC video which my mum found, which we've transferred to a cd. She used to take us there as kids, to say a prayer and kind words for those who suffered such loss. I remember how incredibly silent and still the memorial area always was. Any info at all welcome and thanks in advance x

Hello The name of the street is TYLLWYD street it is still there if you look on Google maps you can see a street view of 16 TYLLWYD street PENYDARREN. I had a quick look at a few records. The 1958 register of electors lists the following. PETER HILL, SYBIL HILL, JOHN.F. HILL, PETER.V. HILL at the address. On the FIND MY PAST website 1939 REGISTER there was the following PETER HILL date of birth 18/9/1890. SYBIL. J. HILL d.o.b 9/2/1898. JOHN. F. HILL 17/6/1926. TERESA HILL 9/4/1930. KATHLEEN. A. HILL 4/2/1939 she married a man called PHILLIPS 12/2/1963.There are other names at address but not shown as they might be still alive?. The father PETER was a boilermakers Riveter and had been in the TERRITORIAL SERVICE and been discharged in DECEMBER 1938. Hope this helps you with your research! GOOD luck. Mike

Dear MikeMerthyr THANK YOU so very much for your kind trouble and effort to help me - I was touched by this. 99% of the registrar details were correct, except my dear mum was missing - Sheila W Hill born 3.2.1937...sadly she passed on 31.05.2008. I was very interested to hear my grandfather was, after all, called Peter, not Patrick (as I'd thought). There were also Theresa Hill, Thomas Hill and Margaret Hill, Mum's siblings...Also...KATHLEEN. A. HILL 4/2/1939 mystified me as in all my talks to my family, this lady was never, ever, mentioned... I found your info incredibly inspirational though and will try now to do some more research. Thank you again. ps. How do I go about seeing who my grandparents IPeter and Sybil Hill)s parents were and where they were from? Would this be within the Merthyr registers? I know that Sybil Hill (SYBIL. J. HILL d.o.b 9/2/1898.) was nee Thomas....but I don't know anymore than this...any pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated with my whole heart! Thanks again and kindest regards

Ah!! Just realised the 'mysterious' Kathleen A Hill is my dear aunt Anne - she obviously used Anne rather than Kathleen as her first name! Thank you again Mike

Hello clemetine8 Happy to help if I can. I had a look to see if I could find grandparents for you, are you positive? that SYBIL JEMMIMA HILL was a THOMAS before she married PETER HILL as I can only find a marriage for a PETER HILL to a SYBIL.J.LEWIS in the APRIL/MAY/JUNE of 1921 in registration district of CRICKHOWELL BRECONSHIRE. I have found a SHELIA. W. LEWIS registered in MERTHYR TYDFIL APRIL/MAY/JUNE QTR 1937 with mothers maiden name of LEWIS could this be your mother? Her siblings names are also registered in MERTHYR with mothers maiden name of LEWIS. If it was LEWIS , SYBIL.J.LEWIS parents were WILLIAM REES LEWIS(house decorator)and JEMMIMA LEWIS who lived in 1911 at 12/13 PONTMORLAIS WEST MERTHYR TYDFIL. PETER HILL'S parents I believe to be THOMAS HILL ( steel worker) from IRELAND and MARGARET HILL (nee O'BRIEN)from DOWLAIS/MERTHYR TYDFIL her father was CORNILIUS O'BRIEN widower from IRELAND living in 1911 at 72 WELL STREET DOWLAIS. Both families are on the census in MERTHYR back to 1891. Hope this is helpful if not sorry for sending you down wrong path. Regards Mike

Hello Mike - Again, I can't thank you enough for your very kind help - I sat here with saucer eyes, nodding furiously, when I read this! Yes! SYBIL JEMMIMA HILL was a LEWIS before she married PETER HILL (as the name 'Lewis' has been handed down through my small family as a Christian name as well as surmane. She did marry PETER HILL in the APRIL/MAY/JUNE of 1921 in registration district of CRICKHOWELL BRECONSHIRE - I remember mum talking of this and I have a beautiful rare photo of this grandmother after their little wedding! SHELIA. W. LEWIS (was my dear mum) registered in MERTHYR TYDFIL APRIL/MAY/JUNE QTR 1937 with mothers maiden name of LEWIS - Thank you! Her siblings names are also registered in MERTHYR with mothers maiden name of LEWIS. (I wonder why they did this?) This is accurate too! SYBIL.J.LEWIS parents were WILLIAM REES LEWIS(house decorator)and JEMMIMA LEWIS who lived in 1911 at 12/13 PONTMORLAIS WEST MERTHYR TYDFIL. I know that this house was passed on to John F. Hill (my uncle) and he lived there with wife Jean and son John F Hill! This part is wonderful too! - I remember fragments mum told me about my grandfather Peter Hill and this all fits in - PETER HILL'S parents I believe to be THOMAS HILL ( steel worker) from IRELAND and MARGARET HILL (nee O'BRIEN)from DOWLAIS/MERTHYR TYDFIL her father was CORNILIUS O'BRIEN widower from IRELAND living in 1911 at 72 WELL STREET DOWLAIS. Both families are on the census in MERTHYR back to 1891. I am going to try to find out more about my grandmother (Sybil J Lewis) as I do remember mum telling me there is a link to the name Thomas...Im hoping it is Merthyr based too... Also - the name Thomas Hill rings so many bells - Mum's cherished grandfather Tom! I remember fragments she told me of him coming from Skibbereen area in Ireland to work in Merthyr with his wife Kate (? probably Margaret was her first name?) wanting always to go back to Ireland as it was her 'homeland'...I remember stuff about having a QC/MP in the family link of O'Brien too...I will try to research this now.... Thank you very much for your kind help Mike - you are so generous in helping me. 3 cheers always to you and to all from Merthyr Tydfil! Regards Mike

I am a new member and have started a thread called 'Peter Hill, Dowlais'. My great-grandfather was Thomas Hill (born c. 1861). I believe he came from Clonakilty, Co Cork. Years ago I dropped in to Merthyr Tydfil library, and a very helpful lady who worked there told me that the Dowlais Ironworks recruited in Ireland. Thomas Hill must have moved to Wales sometime just after 1881 (when he was 20), possibly because there were few prospects of work in Ireland. By 1886 he was married and had started a family.
Their eldest child was my paternal grandfather John Francis Hill. He died in 1967 in London - I barely knew him. He was very musical, like my father, and probably like me too. My aunt told me that the musical gene came from Margaret O'Brien and that she taught the piano, but I do not know if this is correct. According to my aunt, the 2nd son Tom (born 1888), who was a GP in Pontlottyn (I never met him), visited his brother John in London, but otherwise there doesn't seem to have been much contact between the Dowlais Hill families and my grandfather's family in London.
My aunt also said that Peter Hill had a younger brother Joseph. There was also a sister Mary who had a sleeping sickness and died in 1977 (in Bridgend?).
