Hello, can someone please help me answer the following questions: -
Am I right in thinking that the site of the Gethin Colliery is under the A470?
Is there a memorial to the 47 that died in the first explosion in 1862 and the 30 odd that died in another explosion a few years later.
Is there a book of any kind that has been written about these disasters?
Many thanks
Gareth harris
PS The Old Merthyr web-site is one of the best I have seen.

Thank you Merthyr lad. I am also a member of the Welshcoalmines and would ordinarily ask on that site, but I have lost my password and can't seem to get a new one.
I still need answers to the above questions though.

The site of Gethin Colliery (No.1) is obliterated. It was adjacent to the Taff Trail south of Abercanaid and overlooking the football field. It is now landscaped but if you walk over it, pieces of coal are still evidne tform the old tips.
The site of Gethin Colliery (No2) still exists and the tip os clearly evident from the Taff Trail in Abercanaid. There is a footpath running next to the site and the actual shaft can still be seen, capped by a concrete lid. There are also remains of the old pit building still there. You can park adjacent to the A470 south bound and access this site in a few minutes.
