Chief Constable T.K. Griffiths decided to get ride of the motorcyles, afet P.C. Angus Gwynne was knocked off one. He decided that four wheels wre safer than two. In order to keep in touch with the the public, he introduced the Mini Moke. I think we had eight. Okay in summer, but in the wet winters it was a different matter. Ex PC 38 W. Thomas

I remember them, There was a Police officer in Treharris, we gave him a nickname Fat Fred, I expect he was a lovely guy and no disrespect to him and his family. He was clearly too large for the vehicle. I think one or two mokes ended up being given to Afon Taf high school, where they held a motor mechanic class to some of the pupils. Bast of luck with the research.
Hi to Craig Yoxall if your on this forum. I tried to join the force about the same time as you in 1973, but I was an inch too short, the police officers thought I was you when I inquired about joining. We were also in St Mathias scouts together.

I was a Newport Borough Police Officer. In 1965 I was seconded to the Welsh Regional Crime Squad where I served for an unusual 6 years.
In October 1966 I led a team of Regional Crime Squad Officers who set up and ran the mortuary in Moy Road, Aberfan following the disaster. We spent 15 days in the mortuary. I have written and lectured around the country on the small part we played in the tragedy.
2016 will bring us to the 50th. anniversary.
I digress. I remember that at that time the Merthyr Borough Police had several mini-mokes. We thought them strange vehicles but I suspect the Force was short of money and they were cheap to buy and run.
