My grandfather's birth certificate states that he, John Thomas Williams, son of Sarah and William Williams (publican), was born in the Morlais Castle Inn on 7 March 1871. The address was "Morlais Castle Inn, 32 Pant Road, Dowlais". There's a picture on this wonderful website which allegedly shows a Morlais Castle Inn on Pontmorlais, which is nowhere near Pant Road. Plus, the 1911 census from findmypast has a census return for the Morlais Castle at 32 Pant Road, when Thomas and Margaret Jones lived there with their four children. Even more confusingly, I can't find census returns for 32 Pant Road other than this.
So, was there a Morlais Castle Inn in Pant Road? Was there one in Pontmorlais? Which does the picture show? Does anyone have any hints on finding more census data for it?
I seem to have quite a few family connections to Merthyr pubs, and I'll post some more information and questions if I can make some progress on this one. Thanks! Emrys Williams.

Judging from Google Streetview, 32 Pant Road was closer to Dowlais than Pant. Around what is now a children's playground, next to the chapel of rest (an unexpected conjunction!) just south of the Heads of the Valleys road. So it's unlikely to have been up by Pant cemetery. Genuki at www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/MerthyrTydfil/Dowlais/Pubs.htmlsays there was a Morlais Castle Inn in Pant Road, but gives no further information. There is a Morlais Castle pub in Pontmorlais right now. It looks as though the website is confusing the current and historic pubs, which seem to be quite different. Any more ideas? Thanks!

The Morlais Castle Pub was in pant road.It was situated opposit the top of Francis St.It was Delicenced many years ago.Even as a very young child there were apartments in there The big room that was upstairs if I remember rightly was used by the Apostolic Church, that my Grand parents attended, and I remember being taken to one of their meetings, and you wouldn't forget that.Very lively, frightened the life out of me.I'm pretty sure that the building that is on site now, is the original, only with a make over Mal

Wow, that looks right! Thanks! I wasn't reading the house numbers properly on the blurry Streetview pictures.
The 1911 census has Thomas and Margaret Jones living there with 4 children. He's listed as a coal hewer, so maybe even back then it wasn't a pub. It did have 8 rooms, so was a good size.
I don't have census data for any other years. Any ideas? And thanks very much again to Mal!

Hi all, I know this is an old thread but would anyone know the brewery that owned the Morlais Castle Inn on Pant Rd? My great grandfather Henry Evans was listed as the publican in the 1901 census. His son William married a Mary Ann Troakes who are my grandparents. Many thanks.

Hello Bevelini The Glamorganshire Archives in Cardiff might have some records of Licences and Brewery records but not sure exactly if they have. Why not send them an Email worth a try.
