I understand my paternal grandmother was licensee of this pub for a while at the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately it was mortgaged to allow one of her son's to emigrate to America where he was unfortunately killed shortly after his arrival. Sadly the mortgage could not be maintained and the family lost the property.
Any information regarding the pub or its location would be very welcome.

I have the census records for 1881, 1891, and a marriage cert for 1890. Do you know when your family took it over >?
Im curious because ive always been told people went over to america on that side of the family.

Hello Glam
First may I apologise for not replying sooner - until I retired I have only been able to work on my family's story in fits and starts. I am a grandson of William Howells born 18 July 1871 but although I know he and his family lived at 1 Horse St think the licensee may have been his wife, Keturah (Kate), nee Thomas from Abernant.
I can't be sure when the family may have taken over the licence; I believe they lost the licence when a mortgage raised to enable the second or fifth oldest son (Griffith or Daniel (Danny)) to emigrate to America became forfeit. Unfortunately the man died shortly after his arrival in the USA and the mortgage was forfeit. I certainly recall visiting my grandmother I'm almost certain at 1 Horse Street on Saturday 15th April 1950, though it was by then not a pub.
Is it possible for me to identify and photograph the location of Horse St in modern Dowlais?
Any help or suggestions you are able to give would be much appreciated. You can also contact me at philipathowellsmediadotcom.
